Our History

She's A Runner Girl was founded in 2011 by Peggy McCrackin, Ann Saffer, and Jackie Walker after Peggy recognized that while Laramie has a lot of great youth programs, there were not a lot of programs just for elementary-aged girls. A life-long runner herself, who witnessed the positive influence of running on her daughter’s life, she worked on developing the She’s A Runner Girl curriculum to create a program that could do the same for Laramie’s elementary school girls.

That first year, 50 girls and 14 coaches came out for the program, and it has only grown from there with our biggest program to date in 2017 with 92 girls and 43 coaches. The 6-week program provides girls with opportunities for goal-setting, making new friends, and of course building up running distance, culminating in a 5K race.

For the first 7 years, the program ended with participation in the annual Hapi-ness 5K through the Laramie Junior High. In 2018, She’s A Runner Girl established its own race, the Purple 5K Run, which allows us to end the program with our very own awards ceremony and send off for the 6th grade girls leaving the program. The Purple 5K Run also helps make the She’s A Runner Girl program more sustainable for future years.

About She's A Runner Girl

She’s a Runner Girl is a 5-week, curriculum based running program for girls in 2nd - 6th grades. The program is about running, but it is about more than that. She’s A Runner Girl is about creating a community where girls can thrive, where they are supported in reaching their dreams, and where they learn tools for overcoming challenges and achieving their goals. We use running as a platform for:

  • For goal-setting

  • For hard work

  • For building self-esteem

  • For mentoring

  • For bonding

  • For community-building

Our hope is that skills learned here with us transcend into other aspects of our girls’ lives. We hope that through this purple community, our girls become empowered in their own lives, leaders in their communities, and of course, life-long movers who value their health.

She's A Runner Girl is supported by High Plains Harriers.

Today, She's a Runner Girl is directed by a three-woman team- Peggy McCrackin, Jill Woltkamp, and Kali McCrackin Goodenough. All long-time runners, we have been co-directing the program together since 2015. We love seeing the joy and strength our program brings to Laramie’s girls and every spring look forward to meeting and running with Laramie's enthusiastic, energetic, and amazing girls.
